If you're here, then you're probably pursuing a thread and/or CR with Penny and want to help make playing his psychic powers easier, and for that I thank you soooo much. I've made a little form to fill out that covers the bases of his abilities, and if you want a more detailed rundown of his powers, please check out the abilities section of his application.

In short, Penny picks up on the thoughts and feelings of other people pretty much constantly, most of the time it's white noise since there's just so much from so many sources, including thoughts from whole other universes in certain cases. However, sometimes there are certain people whose thoughts and feelings stand out more than others, and then there are people who can close their mind more effectively.

If your character is prone to heightened emotional states that they struggle to control for whatever reason, such as mental illness, it's likely that they are projecting thoughts and feelings outward more loudly.

If your character is more closed off and in control of their feelings for whatever reason, be it years of practice or they're just more emotionally stable, then their thoughts will be more static sounding.

Then, there's characters who have powers and/or magic that allows them to defend against a psychic almost completely, and there's a section in the form for that as well.

Lastly, Penny is also able to delve deep into a person's mind and use spells that can manipulate their memories, dreams and control minds. He is against doing any of that stuff without someone asking him to, and even then he'd likely refuse, but I'll include a section for all of these abilities on the form to be thorough.

THE FORM:

DEFENSES: Does your character have powers and/or magic that can defend against psychic abilities? If so, please detail them in a sentence or two, and please fill out the rest of the form in case they lose those defenses in the future. If not, skip this part.

MENTAL STATE: What sort of mental and emotional state does your character have and how loud do you think their thoughts and feelings are because of that mental and emotional state? See the body of this post for more information.

OOC PREFERENCE: Regardless of how loud their mind is or isn't, is there anything that you'd prefer Penny does not pick up on? Or perhaps you'd prefer he struggle to hear all of it. Deerington's warping should be reason enough for even characters with normally loud projected thoughts and feelings to randomly be hard for him to discern. Just let me know where you draw the line here.

MEMORY & MIND CONTROL: Though Penny would never mess with someone's memories or attempt mind control, you can state here if you are against this ever happening anyway, OR if you're interested in one day trying to utilize his talents in these areas for a plot etc.

DREAM MANIPULATION: Penny doesn't mess with dreams much, but he's not against doing it without permission for whatever reason. He also enters dreams to speak to people when they are asleep if there's no other way to reach them. Here is where you can make clear whether or not you are okay with him visiting their dream to talk to them, and/or mess with the dream they are having in some way.

DEFENSES: Yes. She has the Echo, which is a Blessing that protects against her mind being tampered with or forcefully invaded. If you're familiar with Harry Potter, it would kind of be like literal god-tier Occlumency shielding. However, it would not protect against her emotions being read.

MENTAL STATE: MAN THIS IS... SO COMPLICATED... ... especially since the soul in FFXIV seems to be so intrinsically linked with the mind.

In Deerington, a lot of anxiety and a sense of feeling out of place. Definitely a large amount of guilt over some canon things that recently happened. She tends to block out/shove aside emotions that are unproductive or undesired (which then fed into her Darkside, which is... a whole other complicated thing. I'll give it its own paragraph down below somewhere). She also struggles to view herself as a person with wants and needs of her own that actually matter. It's a more active struggle now after her recent canon development and growth, but she tends to fall back into the 'I'm a weapon, not a person' way of seeing herself as a form of protection. It makes everything easier if she can distance herself from it in that way, if that makes any sense?

Overall her most frequent and powerful emotion is a desire to protect and help others. She is a very nurturing, loving soul.

And, speaking of souls! With her recent canon update her soul is very dense and powerful — moreso than what she was accustomed to, and she will be having trouble keeping all of herself contained in her little fleshy mortal body. So there may frequently be an 'aura' of sorts around her that reaches out when she's feeling a particularly strong emotion toward or around someone. Like if she wants to protect or comfort, but can't reach out physically, she might inadvertently and unconsciously reach out with her metaphysical (aetherial) self to blanket them in a feeling of comfort/protection. Additionally, trying to tap into her emotions... They will be heavy, like a mental weight. Not aggressive, but just possibly overwhelming to someone unprepared for it.

I think to a psychic Era would probably feel more than human, but not like a god/deity. Somewhere midway between mortal and immortal? Definitely powerful and weighty and very Light, as in the element. She is linked to an actual like, world-creating very powerful Deity, which someone with skill might detect; a kind of vast and overwhelming thing, though it would be just a small little link. If picked up on it would be filled with a strong sense of love and desire to protect, which is in line with how Era herself feels by default (thus some additional camouflage).

She is also linked to/in a covenant with the Fae King of a world. She also has a covenant to the Father of Dragons. Those last two pacts are likely irrelevant as they are inactive in Deerington, but figured I may as well mention them.

Now, on to Era's Darkside. There are two aspects of it: Fray, and Esteem. Fray seems to be the more protective and cynical side, while Esteem is the more supportive and aggressive. With her Darkside, if it is speaking to her in her mind I'll note it in my bracket text. Otherwise it is always there as an undertone of emotion that are also protection and love, however they are directed towards Era herself. She can't seem to love herself, and so a fractured part of her soul/psyche does it for her instead. The only other emotion that her Darkside would give off that's notably different from Era's own is the cynicism.

OOC PREFERENCE: I'm fine with whatever! Given how messed up Era is, with her soul tied to her emotions and self and mind and fractured bits of psyche given their own sense of self, etc... If there's anything you want to futz around with, I'd be down for it. Likewise, if you'd rather not deal with this disaster I can't blame you at all.

MEMORY & MIND CONTROL: No to mind control, since her Echo would protect her from it. A maybe to the memory thing in the future, though only if it were a 'recovery of memory' situation. Any other scenarios regarding memory would mess her up too badly, since she's an amnesiac and Sensitive about memory stuff.

DREAM MANIPULATION: No to dream manipulation, but I'm fine with benevolent dream visits if it becomes relevant.
